Christian Cowan brings much needed humor and glamor to NYFW
Let’s face it, fashion movies aren’t exactly funny. While the designers have struggled over the past few months to create beautiful visuals and effects, few videos have been able to hold my attention for more than three minutes (unfortunately, digital fatigue is very real).
Luckily for us, Christian Cowen never took himself too seriously, as demonstrated by his latest digital fashion show featuring Lil Nas X and Amanda Lepore. In a world where everything has become virtual, why not bring frivolity, humor and good old star power into fashion processes?
This season, the designer has continued the same path, inviting yet another motley team of celebrities to appear in the video for his Fall 2021 collection, A Fashion Thing, directed by Matthew Frost. Set in the Pierre Hotel to a soundtrack by Slayter, the script begins with comedians Bowen Young and Chloe Fineman show off their acting skills in a hilarious sketch with cameos by Paris Hilton, Aquaria, Jari Jones, Parker Keith Hill and Richie Shazam. In addition, the proceeds from the collection will go to the Loveland Foundation, which helps the young black queer community in Atlanta.
I wanted the cast to reflect the cause, but also reflect the New York spirit, as the two are very closely related, says Cowan to PAPER. So you have everything from the glamorous girl from the ballroom in Harlem to Dorinda [Medley from the Upper East Side. This is the dichotomy of everything that happens in New York. I also wanted to emphasize that New York is created amazingly for people who are far away.
The designer partnered with Motorola again, and the pink-blinded Razr received excellent product placement early in the film. Each cast wears bold party looks from the Cowan’s Fall 2021 collection, including sparkly pajamas, plunging mini dresses, and bold feather coats.
One of our biggest push this season has been that we always put on stunning looks, but comfort came to the fore, he says. So, everything is in four directions, even leather items have stretch inserts. And I really wanted that spirit of that iconic 2000s era; as if it was such a big era in cinema of stunning female lead roles and comedy scenes. so I wanted to bring this energy.
Since the hotels were mostly empty as a result of the pandemic, Cowan wanted the setting to reflect the grandeur of hotel life, evoking a sense of 2000 nostalgia, hence the Razr plug and the cameo appearance of Paris Hilton. But ultimately the goal was to bring so much necessary humor into fashion that, he said, it doesn’t happen as often as it should. Given everything that’s going on in the world, he says, it’s nice to have comedic relief.
