From the editor
Our best and worst supermarkets are always among the most popular of the year. But rereading last year’s article that was published in early February 2020 is a strange experience. What we couldn’t have foreseen was that in just a few weeks, the first lockdown would trigger panic buying, strained supply chains, and unprecedented online shopping demand. So, this year’s article mirrors the year like no other for supermarkets, and it’s interesting to see which ones did the trick and which struggled to keep up with the pace of change. Since the context remains very different, we didn’t want our cover to look the same. So, which is unusual for us, we have a cover star Arlette Williams. When our photographer left for the parking lot, several Aldi buyers greeted Arlette, some greeted her by name. Aldi praised her as an advocate for clients with strong ties to the community. As consumers, we owe a debt to the supermarket workers, whether in stores or in campervans, who took personal risk to help us get the supplies we needed in the last 12 months, and our coverage is a small tribute to them.
